Removing just a milemetre of gum tissue can make a huge difference both aesthetically and functionally, since gum tissue that extends too far over the crown of the tooth is an ideal place for plaque and leftover food to build up and cause an inflammation and retraction. The gingivectomy is an everyday practice for us, and we usually carry it out before prosthetic procedures or composite veneers to achieve the best possible aesthetics and tissue preparation for the planned prosthetic.
The treatment is completely painless because a local anaesthetic is applied before the procedure so that there are no painful sensations whatsoever. The procedure takes about ten minutes as we use a laser thermo cauterizer to remove a milimetre of gum tissue, or more if deemed necessary, then we let the gums heal for the next ten minutes, and then the gums are treated with a gel that you receive from us.
Regular visits to the dentist are the best way of prevention.
